My parents get the same mobile plan and phone as we have for $20 less.
The most annoying thing is we only pay $20.

Your math is good, yes yes.
They also get free < 20 minute calls at an hour of their choice. So they call me 2 or 3 times at the same time each Saturday and talk for exactly 19 minutes each time. They set a timer.
I suspect they got the free phone because Telstra realised they had been customers for 30 odd years and were the last people in Australia to get a mobile, and this was their big introduction to the world of mobile phones and they'd be so excited they'd upgrade to a higher plan. No, they ONLY use it for that weekly call. The rest of the time it is switched off, even if they are travelling and we have arranged to rendezvous and we want to be able to call them. Luddite scrooges!

Not sure if you're still looking for an opinion.
I travel domestically fairly regularly and have access to both Floptus and Helstra 3G broadband USB modems.
The modem provided by Floptus works with both Linux and Windows out of the box, no troubles.
The modem provided by Helstra works only with Windows and will not change into its modem persona in Linux. (these devices start off as a USB drive when plugged in for the first time).
The Helstra modem has much more reliable coverage the the Floptus modem does, which may suggest that Helstra's 3G network is better than Floptus' 3G network.
I haven't tried VH3 however I know others who have and they agree that Helstra, as much as they dislike them, have a better 3G network when it boils down to coverage.
Most people in Cairns would certainly agree with the last statement.
