The construction sector's health waned for a fourth consecutive month in August, as fiscal stimulus continued to pull back.

The Australian Industry Group and Housing Industry Association's Performance of Construction Index eased marginally from July to August, to 43.2 points.

That is below the key 50 point level that separates expansion from contraction.

The director of public policy at AiGroup Peter Burn says a steep decline in house building activity in recent months is of particular concern.

"Private demand is not coming up to a level that is making up for the withdrawal of the fiscal stimulus, so that there's less work coming in from the Building [the] Education [Revolution] projects and so on, and that is not being made up in other areas, for example in commercial construction," he said.
