Complete failure of the Indian Commonwealth games? John Howard REJECTED by the ICB? Adam Gilchrist shouldn't walk? Ben Cousins can't get enough coke? Latest scores and/or a rant at the coach? Speak of it here.*

First things first. AFL GF tomorrow. An historic day. the evil St kilda vs the mighty collingwood. Who will triumph? I hear a lot of you sigh and say "who cares dude?" Well I care and I think it's pretty unaustralian of you not to care. So there. :P

Only one more sleep until...

victory :)

All too real I fear.

Should we go to the games. Admittedly to not go would be too bad. We have to go. Otherwise it looks like were getting payback for all the negative press the indian media gave us not 1 year ago. From what I'm hearing we've already bags'd the best of a bad situation in regard to games accommodation. I'm thinking of marathon when I say harden up australian athletes and let's get in on. But negligent security planning would worry me. Plus their structures are falling down? That ain't a good look.

It IS India, we're talking about, TP.
I'm not sure what some people expected. Take a look at the ladders!!!
For most Indians, I imagine this would be considered extravagant living quarters. - almost 5 star.
That's the problem with most Westerners, we have become so arrogant and sanitized we've forgotten how most of the third world lives.
Maybe now we might realise, what Indian and other third world athletes might have to overcome to achieve their own feats, on the world stage.
Maybe to get a balanced view, we should be asking the people from Ghana or some of the other African nations, and even the Fiji Islanders what they think of the accommodation?

Recently had a person give a lecture upon returning, of providing a water filtration system in a village in the Congo.
He installed a simple filter system that provided clear water, which was no more than a polythene pipe filled with carbon fibres.
The photo's he presented though showed what they had been drinking looked like orange juice, and was the same water source as their cattle and goats.
The local plumber, that was employed to help him had three tools - a stillson and a hammer, and a hacksaw.
The local council here supplied the filtration system and thank goodness he took his own tool-kit with him. He left the entire tool-kit with the local plumber, who apparently thought he had become a millionaire over-night.
There were also often 6 people living in a single roomed mud hut, with a raised fire-place in the middle.
They slept on the ground, - even the elderly.

I guess I'm trying to put it into perspective, and I think its a matter of perception; but there is also a case that the authorities who granted the games to New Delhi, should have been inspecting facilities, and taking control if they were unhappy, months ago. 7 days out, is cutting it a bit short. You are kidding aren't you? I've been to many third world places including war zones. Irrelevant to argument IMO. I know folks in the airline and aeronautics biz that live in nice apartments in Mumbai and Delhi (ala Singapore).

The unprofessionalism of the situation is not defendable. This is a BRIC nation constantly waving the "look at our GDP/growth" on the world stage.

Consider that Kingston, Jamaica (a cesspool) hosted the 1966 games succesfully and Kuala Lumpur in 1998 (half cesspool).

Kinshasa or Mogadishu don't enjoy the burgeoning economic growth of the capital of one the fastest growing economies in the world, nor did they put their hands up to host a global mega sporting event (but they probably have equal levels of corruption).

No sympathy to a nation that has cricket billionaires.

Ha, nice find!

All Blacks copying an American football ad = F.A.I.L.

I reckon it's all part of winning the World Cup next year. Their opponents are supposed to watch this and cr@p themselves. Hopefully some time in October next year the AB's will all be in need of the Heimlich manoeuvre ... again.

I agree. South Africa has far less resources than India and pulled off the Soccer World Cup - a much bigger event - quite spectacularly (albeit with management assistance from FIFA).

India has successfully hosted large sporting events before so this one I would think is one big cockup from :

1. The people who appointed the organising committee.
2. The organising committee.
3. The people in charge of monitoring progress and the performance of the organising committee (did this function even take place?).

Despite being a kiwi I don't really follow rugby. I have started watching i recently to try and get better at seeing the small things that happen (we don't have enough naginata matches here and I have to do refereeing at my next grading so watching sports and listening to the commentators helps me get the hang of watching a fight closer for scoring purposes).

One of my friends (also a kiwi) I go to and ask about things I saw which the commentators didn't talk about to see what he thinks. He is a rugby fan (used to play) and he has mentioned that NZ tends to dominate the world for a few years leading up to the world cup and then lose in it.

The All Blacks dominate world Rugby fullstop with the only glitcg being a few years in the late 90s when we did. They are the single most dominant team in any sport (based on over 100 years of dominance). They have choked at 5 world cups on the trot.

PS I'm rugby tragic. In fact in a Masters tournament last week (full contact for over 35s), the Auckland captain called me a rugby harlot. :)

PPS Collingwood are choking as I write. 61 all 7mins to go.

I wish TP. :(

Now I have to go through it all over again. I started worrying mid way through the third quarter. We were lucky to get the draw in the end. I'm still shaking.

Pretty dumb that they don't play extra time and then golden goal etc.

Yeah, the wheels fell off in the third.

Fair enough, TP.
I don't dispute anything you've said.
And I'm not trying to defend the authorities responsible.
I agree with Turkey.
But have we (Australia - Western countries) now reached a level of expectation about professionalism and facilities, for games such as these, that puts them out of reach of many countries?
I think we will reach an economical point, where very few nations can adequately supply the facilities.
Yet isn't the point of the games, to highlight that athleticism is the ability to rise above a person's standing in life, and reach the pinnacle of the human body.
I would like to see what happened in such games if everyone (including our own athletes) had to operate off a level playing field, without the advantage of privilege.
And despite the billionaire cricketers as you rightly point out, I would also still wonder what percentage of Indians live below the poverty line.
Like most countries the wealth is probably concentrated in a small percentage of the population.
Don't get angry with me, I'm simply trying to ascertain the truth about the whole fiasco.

I didn't play much rugby but I've watched it and been a fan for as long as I can remember and I reckon your friend has summed it up.

Unfortunately I was too small to be a forward and too slow to be a back. I've got good speed over the first 5 metres but the top-end speed of a one-legged donkey. Means I'm decent at racquet sports but suck royally at anything played on a field.

In Norway I played American football and the only position available was "tight end". As I am 5'10" and at the time weighed about 75 Kg (admittedly with very low body fat) I was quickly renamed to the "wide end" hehehe

At the time I joined every single team that had a place going as my grades didn't really matter so much.

I can easily recognise why people join team sports in high school but am glad I gave it up when I left Norway. I would have never been able to drop out of uni if I had got caught up in the sports :)

I'm the amateur version of Bart Cummings in Rugby. Thou art a Scrumhalf, thy Number is 9.

I can teach you to pass missiles both ways. Its not science or art, just technique and practice.
