Should crack the half century in 2012?

50,000,000 people on food stamps!!!!!!
That's 1/6th of the population.

How does food stamps compare with social welfare payments in Australia?

something like this

Internet payments heavyweight Bpay and its member banks believe the time for its long-anticipated Me at My Bank Online (Mambo) is finally at hand, and it would ensure better government payment delivery.

In the 1930s depression, people lined up to get into soup kitchens. Food stamps are the 21st century's version of soup kitchens.

Medved, I think the equivalent here could be the charities, like Salvos or Vinnies, that provide actual food parcels. I haven't had anything to do with them for a over 15 years, so don't know what they do now. I have read that these services are under a lot of strain and can't keep up with demand, but that was MSM so who knows.

Food Stamps

Nothing like it at all in Austalia to my knowlege, you cant afford to feed the family you either starve or rely on a charity food bank to give it to you.
A few years ago the government did flirt with the idea of introducing an american style food stamp system to replace part of the social security payments. Their was a massive outcry and it never got anywhere. So poor families can continue to starve their children while the parents spend all their money on alchohol and gambling.
The social security system hear is very generous however, seeing families or children sleeping in the street is very rare.

Might I say, that it depends where you go, and your experience in this area of society.
In some parts of Australia, you will see families sleeping on the streets.
There are quite a few that sleep in their cars.
