‎30+ earthquakes in Christchurch since Monday. No 5 was the big one.

Now get this, 25 after shocks since the 12:51 bigger one. Archives reveal Canterbury has been shaking for months. For gods sake lets pray that these aren't precursursors for a bigger one.

For those that skipped Maths, the seismological richter scale is logarithmic. That means a 6 is ten times bigger than a 5 and a 7 ten times bigger than a 6.

Monitor this:
http://www.geonet.or...ent_quakes.html
MONITOR THAT CONSTANTLY. There is a shake every hour.

Then a news wanker says we didn't realise we were on a fault line. Really? Like this ancient one?

i've live in rabaul, east new Britain, new guinea. if the ground wasn't shaking, or the volcano chugging away the locals would get worried.

I am guessing that is out of context or he had an accent. We are the shaky isles after all. That would be like an Australian saying he didn't know they had kangaroos.

We get taught tectonics at primary school.

CHCH looks like it might take the biggest natural disaster death factor away from my home town. This looks pretty bad.

For those of you trapped overnight, I'll make a pointless post and state hang in there canterburians.

I will also say god speed and we are praying (those that do).

May I say that the diff with Yasi and you is the continuity. At 00:57 you got 3.9 at 01:21 you got 3.9. This must be shock 30+. It will not be the last. I'm digging deep for Red Cross NZ.

I don't pray but I'll have a crack looking at that seismic data

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Christchurch tonight, and in the days ahead.
We especially extend our sympathy and best wishes to the families of victims.
I've never experienced an earthquake, but it must be the most horrible feeling not knowing whether the next tremor will be stronger or weaker than the last. Do you stay inside or remain outside? Can you sleep, or do you stay alert?
There will be some people who will never fully recover from this.
Their lives will never be the same.
Buildings can be rebuilt, but lives are much more difficult to restore.
Once again we have to show our respect to the natural world, and our fragile hold on this planet.
To our friends across the ditch - we realise our inadequacy in the face of your tragedy, but we'll try to do whatever we can.
Try to stay safe.

Without doubt structures weakened by the last came down. The collapse of the cathedral spire was the start. Beautiful city and cathedral.

With 30 tremors/shakes a day one can pray that this is it. Please.

Bloody hell. My medical consultant on the couch next to me reckons they'll have started to decompose. I believe the site is a no go zone with the Hotel Grand Chancellor teetering nearby and 2-4 tremors an hour.

Christchurch quake: More than 100 may have perished in CTV

Quote

With 80 per cent of the city without a water supply authorities advised people to conserve water by not washing or flushing their toilets and to collect water in buckets when it rained.

Water should be boiled.

80 per cent of Christchurch without water

They were saying a further 300 are missing. Not good.

My wifes best friend lives in Christchurch (Thankfully she and her family are fine.... she was at home sick when it hit). When she stayed over at our place she thought it was very funny that I stored water in case of a disaster. Thought it wasn't so dumb when the floods hit Qld, probably thinks I'm awesome now.

I noted that one of the pictures showed a shop that I visited in January this year completely destroyed. Very sobering

Man, that is just staggering!

We just went through flooding and cyclones in Queensland, which was bad enough. What a horrific turn of events over there!

Is the whole world going crazy? Natural disasters and riots all over the place!

I can't predict natural disasters Anders, but I think we need to expect more of the riots.
And in some of the most unexpected places I fear.
People are finally finding their voice after decades of oppression.
Its the unfortunate truth that some of their friends will die fighting for freedom.
Our oppression may be slightly different, but nonetheless, just as restricting - excessive debt.

I am praying now for all those New Zealanders, who will never see their loved ones again, and who's bodies may never be recovered. This disaster will affect New Zealand for a long time to come, and the alarming, and disarming thing is we do not know whether this is the end of it. Another tremor could hit anytime.
Must be absolutely disturbing.

Keep in mind that my home town (Napier) had some 250 odd dead from a decent earthquake about 80 years ago on the first day of school. This is not exactly a new thing for NZ as is evidenced by the fact they have the cash ready to pay for it.

The riots seem to be a good thing on the whole I think (despite Gaddafi doing what the news tells me is some _really_ insane stuff[1])

So far it looks like it is just Australia and dictators that are going "whoa, where did that come from"

[1] They tell me he sent in planes to bomb protesters and the protesters (with minimal weaponry) managed to beat the elite guards at the airport. That is insane! Just think how mad you would have to be to take on a supposedly elite military force with no weapon.

Sorry to continue derailing with the riots thing...

What about the USA? How much longer will it take, with high unemployment and little social welfare, before there will be riots in the streets over there? And this is a country with an insane gun culture!

They have an insane gun culture _because_ they are indoctrinated with propaganda. If the propaganda doesn't get them to rebel they won't.

The purveyors of the propaganda are vested interests in the status quo (they make cash from the status quo by bitching about it).

I can't see Glenn Beck or similar giving up their paycheck to step into robespierres shoes.

This is why I generally despise "revolutionaries". They follow people that don't want things to change or they are unaware that they will be second against the wall.

Totally off topic.
:offtopic:

Righto here is a new problem. 100-200 people starting to rot. The situation is such that dodgy ones like the Gand Chancellor will have to get knocked down.

Then, pick up the pieces. Any of you smelled rotting bodies? Unlike the rat found as a kid?

These folks need a respectful handling. Pull on the arm and it comes off in your hand territory now.

Say your prayers now for the malti national rescue teams that will see stuff that will haunt them for life.

PS The rescue teams need the prayers now

Agree TP/Bernie.
Without wanting to sound macabre, some people will never be discovered because they will have decayed beyond recognition before the recovery teams reach them.
Having spent time with police, ambulance and firies, some of their stories are horrific.
There are sights that every rescue team dreads.
I'm sure they have already seen horrendous things in the aftermath in Christchurch.
I think we have made the point, and probably need to leave this subject there, as this is a public forum.
I am trying to be a little sensitive for those who have lost loved ones in this tragedy.

Tor,
I agree.
New Zealanders courageously live with earthquakes every day.
But while we can accept that disasters happen, and are a part of the reality of life, I doubt we are ever fully prepared for them. And I have no doubt that the people in Napier that lost loved ones in that quake, still grieve them 80 years on.

And finally, I can't speak for others, but I think it is the intensity and speed of the changes in the Mediterranean, that have caught people off-guard. Some of us who have an interest in what is always happening around the Middle East, and were aware that tensions were rising, but this has all happened in the space of just 3 weeks.

I wanted to make a different post in this thread.

I think it is fascinating that our entire earth's crust floats on a sea of magma, and that it is actually only a thin layer of earth and rock that supports our life.
That these plates move and create earthquakes has always fascinated me.
Somehow this heat from the core of the earth remains constant (Why doesn't it cool down?) and the only time we become aware of it, is when earthquakes or volcanoes erupt, and remind us.
It also is the reason why certain mining deposits are where they are.
As this schematic shows.
