Chinese nuke plants could power Australia
May 18, 2011 - 4:54PM AAP

It will soon be possible for Australia to import nuclear power plants made in China, a nuclear policy expert says.

Former Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) chair Ziggy Switkowski says the "centre of gravity" for innovation and manufacturing of nuclear power is moving quickly to China.

The cost to manufacture nuclear components in China was likely to be around 60 per cent of that in Western countries, he said.

Advertisement: Story continues below Mr Switkowski made the comments during a panel discussion on Australia's energy future - and the use of nuclear power - in the wake of Japan's Fukushima disaster.

"When we are ready to get involved in nuclear power, we will look in a catalogue, pick up the phone and place an order on a Chinese vendor, who will deliver it at a price that we can afford," Mr Switkowski told a Committee for Economic Development of Australia luncheon on Wednesday.

"Today there are 60 reactors being constructed around the world and I think 27 of them are being constructed by the Chinese.

"The Chinese are rapidly building up expertise and experience in building nuclear power stations."

obviously this f*cktard in an expensive suit has never bought a product made in china.
i say the 1st nuke plant gets shoved up his ass., if it comes form china.
at least half the radiation will have leaked out before it gets fully and snuggly fitted. i cant believe the total disconnect from the real world this moron has.

I would never buy anything made in China that would be a threat to my health or safety (i.e., food, medicines, power tools, cars).

Australia bought & built an Argentinian nuclear reactor with known design issues. So I wouldn't think any shortcomings with the chinese reactor would stop the government ordering one!

It could be a cunning ploy. Everyone will go "OMFG, we can't have nuclear power from China".

Then the govt announces that we are getting nuclear power from Germany and everyone is happy ... "phew , the nuclear power is from Germany".

If they first announced that they are getting nuclear power from Germany, then everyone would go "OMFG, we can't have nuclear power", especially after Fukushima.

I think that Germany is ditching all its nuclear plants.

I hear they come with a shiny gold oval label that reads "Made in China" stuck loosely at the bottom of the plastic containment vessel. :)

Any political party looking to introduce nuclear power in Australia, will most likely be creating political suicide.
However due to the fact that Australia has large stocks of Uranium, unfortunately there will be much ado to encourage other countries to invest in things that require that Uranium.
A bit like Australia talking tough when it comes to Armed Conflicts, but not really prepared to actually put that many boots on the ground on the front-line (apart from our brilliant SAS)

If Malcolm Turnbull is allowed to pooh all over an eminent CEO such as Mike Quigley, then I say it is game on for us to express an opinion on Ziggy S.
Switkowski was born in Germany who are are in the process of shutting down their nuclear industry.

Merkel's Bavarian allies opt for complete nuclear shutdown by 2022
Posted ImageThe Emsland plant in Lingen is the most recent to go offline
Precautionary measures and routine maintenance have shut down all but four German nuclear power plants. Chancellor Merkel's Bavarian sister party now says it wants to bring down the curtain on atomic energy altogether.
