The man photographed kissing his girlfriend in the middle of riots in Vancouver, Canada, this week is from Perth, trying to make it big as a stand-up comedian.

Former Aquinas College student Scott Jones has become an internet sensation with a smooch that has been dubbed by the world's media as "love among the ruins".

Never mind the players - they look like a pair of tossers, judging from the insets and their choice of venue - but who was the photographer?

Catching the moment is the real achievement here.

They had some quotes from the photographer yesterday. He didn't realise what he'd captured until after.

And now it turns out to be a set-up... or maybe not... depends on who you talk to, apparently.

I did wonder.

It was a bit too perfect, the pose, the lighting, the tasteful glimpse of black knickers...

Everything is a fake now though.

Probably was before too.

I choose to ignore most of the "expose" type stories because I am happier with an image than with what seems to be the constant piggy backing off an image. I know most of the images I will see in my life are faked up or designed to sell me something or whatever and I know my girlfriend wears makeup.

Still enjoy them both. I guess I appreciate them for what what they cause inside me. The expose type stuff only stirs the bits of me that I think are somewhat crappy.

When I refered in the title to planking that is actually what I thought it was. A new form of planking in stead of lying like a plank get a partner and kiss.

Get a photo of you kissing in some ridiculous situation and it is even funnier than planking!

I wonder what strange thing will be next?

I am trying to think of others...

I reckon you could get just as much attention if you could have run out in front of those riot police with a toilet bowl placed it on the ground on the road and sat on that reading a newspaper conveniently covering your privates causally going about your business. I wonder what could upstage that!

That would really be a wtf moment for anyone seeing that photo?

I guess beyond that it would be team efforts, say a mobile office of a few desks and people dressed in office attire, computers phones etc and set them out in the middle of the action and quietly working away.

There are so many potential ways to take "planking" to a new level that people far more creative than me can work out. I don't think this blokes fame will last long when next week someone will work out how to upstage him.

I like that. I think there is something profound in there somewhere, a truth for the new(ish) millennium.

With new social structures come new principles and new values - and I think that is one of them.

When everything is a lie it ceases to be the same kind of a lie, or possibly a lie takes on a new, mutually agreed value.
