Private companies are not likely to release their data I don't think. As far as I can tell you stay private as long as you can afford to.

Interesting POV. I get the gamble but feel you are gambling more.

I gamble 40k, I won't go under 80, and I'm happy with that. you are suggesting going all in.

What happens if you run into an EL2/SES like me when the private sh*t drys up? if you can convince me you are worth your salt well and good, if not, you could loose it all. Not you personally (I know you have skills and a fishtank of gold) but their are a lot more full of bluff and BS out there than you.

Acting EL2 for Xmas - your dept is worth more than mine obviously:)

Yea, as the SES are made redundant though, will the ministers promote or not? I don't know. I know guys who have thrown away PS promotions chasing contracting for a ministers whim with different depts. Too much to risk for me. I'll prove I know how to organise what I know in these times of change and if they drop my pay, I'll organise less. My dept is looking at doubling numbers (from 50 odd k to 100 odd k) if labour stays in and i know how to run the big numbers in a certain field. They keep paying me, i keep running them. They drop me off, i right novels at work and someone else begs me to run something for them:)

Begs your pardon your EL2ness. 100K though. You is getting ripped.

Have you seen what treasury get?

yes the only way I see us meeting an extra 2.5% efficiency dividend is to pop the SES bubble.

I'm on 100k as an EL1 acting for forseebale future.
120k as El2 acting for Xmas - but with promises (finger in throat) it's what I'm worth.
I'm only a nominal 6 - other EL1s in my area are pissed but they dug themselves their own graves. The mere fact that a 6 with 7 years up can outshine them after 15-20 is their fault not mine.
And, before you say let them try some political sh*t on me, they are pretty lame. Director and SES know and like me because I have answers to things they can't begin to understand. EL2 above me is worst enemy (but also best friend) because he knows the ropes and doesn't want to promote me because we are fiends (his sense of slef righteousness is different to mine but not totally dissimilar) but I got promoted in his sickness which he is all over (not his descision).

it's all fun and games man. I know what i am doing. the difference between installing desktop/network sh*t over 100k people or 50k people is just numbers. It's a matter of keeping staff on side so they keep doing it for you (but finding the dudes who can use the databases to run the numbers is hard when I can't do a direct transfer from another dept (guy who used to work for me has the brain and incalantion but it's hard to get him permanent (so far))).

Why can't you do a transfer at level for your guy? (section 25 or 26?) they come across at full previous dept pay? I sense the beginnings of empire building. :) No doubt you know the game.

I'm at the precipice - i can feel it:) Next 12 months is a gambele but only 40k PA for me which I know I can make up ove the next decade anyways.

How good are you with SAP and HP openview? That's what i need. Assset sh*t in SAP and hardware config sh*t in Openview. But I have a 6 who is pretty cool and worth an El1 anyways (don't know what I think of her as a person but she is a great worker - i don't get the scapbooking preoccupation when beers are way beter:) - my ex 6 likes beers).

Oh yea, last time I had beers with my ex 6 he suggested the transfer thing. but I have a team full of people that want to get promoted. Some are worth it. It's a hard juggling act but the back of my head still says we need him (if only to keep the women at bay).

I think nature/nurture is a bit of both. I think there is a large variation in behavioural traits that are genetic and therefore some people are suitable for some professions rather than others. It would seem strange if this wasn't the case given the variations in physical characteristics. Even from within the same family. Why wouldn't the differences also manifest in different personalities? These surely contribute as much to survival as physical characteristics.

Apparently scientists have recently isolated the gene for bratiness.

The competition for CEO's is fierce. Mainly because there is relatively small pool of people with the skills and experience. The number of people with skills and experience diminishes with each rise in the ranks.

Shareholders would argue they're worth the money if they are making you money. It's only when they're not that it becomes a problem. If they link the salaries heavily to performance the CEO has an incentive for taking more risk. (nature) And this can end badly as we have so often seen. If you are offering sub par wages will you attract the talent?

Is it fair? That depends on your definition of fairness. If fairness in a moral sense (everyone getting an equal share regardless of their endeavours) then no it's not fair. The only way to make it fairer is to give as many as possible the opportunity a good eduction. And try to remove any impediments (nurture)

In answer to the Pygmalion question. I think there is probably a lot a wasted talent that never got the chance to flourish.(nurture) But there also a lot of people who have been given the opportunities that have ended up in mediocrity. (nature)

Woah - just saw this post.

basically. I think you are trying to intellectualixe what I posted earlier.

Deeply, I'm too drunk to understand Pygmalion ATM.

The competition for CEos is unfair - no questions asked.

Feel it dude, let go go of the torness that make you feel bound to logic (love you tor:)).

We are alll capable of great things - our lives lead us astray.

SAP is something I have considered moving into and there is scope for that where I currently work. It has certain java underpinnings. You'll struggle to find SAP programmers for what you're offering. I can't even get java programmers. the only thing we had going was big training budgets.
