  1. Art and Antiques Thread

    14 March 2012 - 11:33 AM

    Hi all,

I'm contemplating purchasing some hand coloured lithograph prints by John and Elizabeth Gould / Henry Richter.

J and E Gould produced a Birds Of Australia series comprising of 600 species. 250 original prints were made in the mid 1800s.

Gould's identification of the birds now nicknamed "Darwin's finches" played a role in the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Gould's work is referenced in Charles Darwin's book, the Origin of Species.

Some of the drawings are so well drawn and accurate that ornithologists have been known to use the drawings as references for identifying specimens.

Prices I've found have ranged from $350.00 to over $10,000 depending upon the print (popular birds like parrots and the black swan command the higher prices).

Any of your fine selves into art? Anybody in the know?
  2. Grim times ahead for Queensland Construction Industry

The Queensland housing construction sector is bracing for a further slump, particularly in areas where the tourism industry is already suffering.

Construction is already down 40 per cent.

Areas like the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Cairns are expected to feel the worst effects.

The MBAQ says approvals in Cairns in the state's far north have dropped from an average of 200 a months to just 15.

Yet, the builders are still asking the same money to build a house today as they did two or more years ago.

I bet if they lowered the price there would be more activity. Prices of lots have dropped dramatically, I'm seeing blocks in Cairns at about 30 - 40% off 2007 prices. It's time, It's time for the construction industry to meet the market, this includes the materials sector.
